The Horbury Tapestry: Then and Now Project

Part I, funded by Wakefield Council Culture Grants as part of Our Year – Wakefield District 2024, carried out in conjunction with One to One Development Trust, records the making of the tapestry, the individual pieces, the volunteers who made it, and the star of the show – Horbury itself, it history, its people and its appearance in 2003/4.

The text for this presentation is based on the original description of the work prepared by project leader Janet Taylor in 2004, with additions to help viewers not familiar with Horbury to appreciate some of the township’s history.  It also records the names of the individual artists who created these gems.

There have been so many changes since 2004 that we felt it best to follow the original text and not try and update it.  As it stands it provides a record of Horbury in 2004.

Part II invites people, particularly young people, to respond to the tapestry by taking photographs of places and people in Horbury that are significant to them.  We anticipate these will illustrate many of the changes that have taken place in the last 20 years and show Horbury as it is in the summer of 2024.
