Convent
by Sue Fox
St Peter’s Convent and garden. It was built in1874 as a House of Mercy for young female penitents, the “fallen women” of the Victorian era. The convent chapel (Grade II listed) is to the right of the building; the green tower to the left, a local landmark, is the canopy of the watertower. In 2004 the nuns now live in a smaller house in the grounds whilst the convent is occupied in part by St Hilda’s private school. The brickwork is minutely stitched by Sue Fox in beautiful colours.
