Caphouse Colliery: The National Mining Museum
by Carol Booth
Caphouse Colliery, now the National Mining Museum. Coal was a key factor in the development of industry around Horbury Bridge. Guided by ex miners visitors can appreciate the history of the industry and take a trip down into the pit, walk along the underground “roads” and see how the coal was cut. Mining equipment made by Richard Sutcliffe of Horbury was exported all over the world. This winding gear was embroidered by Carol Booth. Her husband’s grandfather was a boiler man at this very pit.
