River Calder in flood
by Hilary Elstone
The river occasionally floods spectacularly. Here we see the late Georgian lock cottage, upstream from the scant remnants of John Smeaton’s Washing Stones Lock on the river, which was made navigable in the 1760s before the building of the canal. This piece was embroidered by Hilary Elstone, who took the photograph.
