Morris dancers

by Mollie Partington

The Horbury Shroggies & Ring ‘O Belles Morris dancers. The men’s team named after a reference to Horbery Shrogs in the 2nd Shepherds Play in the Wakefield Mystery Plays. (c. 1400-1450) “ I have sought with my dogs, All Horbery shrogs, And of fifteen hogs, Found I but one ewe”. The team performs N.W. Morris style. Their performances near Ring of Bells Yard are a regular feature of the Horbury Street Fair and the clogs undoubtedly were made by Trefor Owen whose shop in Queen Street supplied dance teams throughout the land.
