Horbury’s John Carr was so successful that he not only designed but also paid for this beautiful church, replacing the previous Norman one that was unable to accommodate the growing population in 1794.  The building is now Grade I listed.  John Carr is buried in the Carr family vault below the north transept.  The interior of the church is being restored to its original Georgian glory; the work should be complete by 2006.  Lesley Franks stitched this in black from the original architect’s drawing.
