Fisherman by canal
by Joan Burton
Downstream on the canal from Horbury Bridge you will often find anglers. This piece is a terrific example of light and shade. Transport between Halifax and the East Coast was much improved with the opening of the new cut on the Calder & Hebble Navigation, running between Calder Grove and Ravensthorpe in the 1830s. The local coal mines and mills also benefitted being able to ship their goods even more easily than by the river, which had been made navigable by John Smeaton back in the 1760s, but had unreliable flows of water.
