Onward, Christian Soldiers: The Whitsun procession for which Baring Gould composed this hymn is periodically recreated starting at St John’s school Horbury Bridge. This procession in 2000, included the bishop of Wakefield, the Horbury Victoria Band, schoolchildren, parishioners, descendants  of  Sabine Baring Gould’s and his wife, local mill girl Grace Taylor,  families, biographer Keith Lister. All singing lustily (although not quite so lustily at the top of the hill). Embroidered by Elvene Page, a descendant of Grace Taylor’s family.
