The story of how 70 people joined together to create a history of their town

The Horbury Tapestry, painted in stitches, was created to celebrate the centenary of Horbury Library. The group was led by one of the Friends of Horbury Library, Janet Taylor, who is a textile designer, BA(Hons). There are over 228 pieces of embroidery on the 8 ft tall panel.  Each one has been stitched with great care and expertise and each one is a gem.

Through this website, you can zoom into any piece on the tapestry, click on the hotspot, see the individual piece before it was stitched in place, find the name of its creator and learn more about the site or individual portrayed.

The Horbury Tapestry, due to its fragility cannot be taken out of the glass, hence when photographed there is a slight reflection to the left of the image. It was photographed by One to One Development Trust who have digitised the Tapestry at ultra-high resolution, enabling it to be viewed on any device, and making an interactive overlay that shows each individual embroidery work in detail. You can almost feel the textures of the different materials.
